How long before I see real improvement?
Most families see meaningful progress within 4–6 weeks of daily practice. In weeks 1–2, progress looks like less screaming and the timer being accepted. In weeks 5–8: 10–15 minutes of independent play with low distress. Full age-appropriate independence typically requires 3–6 months of consistent practice.
Should I push through screaming and crying every session?
No. Pushing through Level 4–5 distress doesn't build confidence — it may retraumatize. If every session involves full-blown panic, go further back on the separation ladder (shorter duration, smaller steps) or seek professional guidance. The therapeutic zone is challenging but manageable — not overwhelming.
Is this separation anxiety or something more serious?
