When sessions don't go as planned, the instinct is to blame yourself or your child. Instead, treat each challenge as a diagnostic clue. Here are the seven most common problems and exactly what to do about each one.
Problem 1: "Child refused to engage at all today."
Why: The material or approach didn't match today's version of the interest, or the child's state wasn't ready. Fix: Check readiness checklist. Did something change about the interest? Test with a different material from the same interest universe. "Not today" is valid data — record and adjust.
Problem 2: "Child engaged for 2 minutes then ran away."
Why: Session started well — this is actually success. Two minutes of genuine interest-based engagement is two minutes more than zero. Fix: Celebrate 2 minutes. Tomorrow aim for 3. Gradual duration building is the protocol.
Problem 3: "Child refused to let me introduce any learning."
Why: The learning component was too visible. The "bridge" was too obvious. Fix: Follow the child's lead entirely for 2 sessions. Don't introduce explicit learning — just be present in their interest world. Learning emerges naturally through narrating, questioning, and extending.
Problem 4: "The interest I planned around is no longer their main interest."
