Most Nights Won't Be Perfect. Here's Your Troubleshooting Guide.
"Session abandonment is not failure — it's data."
Problem 1: "White noise is 'annoying' or 'too loud'"
Reset to barely audible — the child should almost not notice it. Try pink noise (lower frequency, softer) or brown noise (even lower). Try nature sounds: rain, ocean waves, wind. Some children tolerate mechanical fan sound better than electronic noise.
Problem 2: "Earplugs come out during sleep"
Try silicone putty earplugs that mold to ear shape. Try a sleep headband instead — it can't be unconsciously removed as easily. If no ear coverage works, strengthen other layers (sound masking, room treatment) to compensate.
Problem 3: "Good for 3 nights then regresses"
This is normal. The brain cycles through habituation. Continue the protocol unchanged for a full 14 nights before concluding anything. Regression around Night 4–5 is so common it has a name: the "extinction burst." Things get worse before they stabilize.
Problem 4: "Room treatment didn't help"
Audit the specific sounds causing wakings. Room treatment absorbs mid-to-high frequency sounds (voices, TV) but does less for low-frequency sounds (traffic rumble, bass from neighbors). Low-frequency problems need denser materials or sound masking to address.
Problem 5: "Child won't do the sensory calming routine"
The routine may be too long or too structured. Simplify: warm bath + one calming activity + the sleep sound. Let the child choose from 2–3 calming options rather than following a fixed script.
Problem 6: "3 weeks and nothing has improved"
