Is licking objects dangerous?
Licking itself is a sensory behavior, not inherently dangerous. The risk comes from the surfaces — exposure to pathogens, chemicals, or toxic substances. Safe alternatives satisfy the need while eliminating the health risk.
Will providing licking tools make the behavior worse?
Research consistently shows the opposite. When sensory needs are met through appropriate channels, inappropriate seeking decreases. Providing tools isn't "encouraging" licking — it's managing it safely.
At what age should I be concerned?
