My child knows the skill in therapy but not at home. Is this common?
This is the most common pattern in structured pediatric therapy, and it is fully expected and fully addressable. Skills become bound to teaching contexts. With deliberate generalization programming — varied materials, multiple instructors, setting exposure — skills travel. You are not experiencing failure; you are experiencing the most common gap between therapy-room acquisition and functional use.
How long does generalization programming take?
Most families see early stimulus generalization within 2–4 weeks of consistent multiple-exemplar training. Setting generalization typically requires 4–8 weeks. Person generalization often follows within the same window. Community generalization is an 8–16 week target. Maintenance is ongoing.
Do I need a BCBA to program generalization?
A BCBA is ideal for designing formal programs and troubleshooting complex profiles. However, the principles on this page can be implemented at home by informed parents. For children with complex behavioral profiles or no generalization across multiple weeks, a BCBA consultation is recommended. Call 9100 181 181 for guidance.
Are these materials suitable for non-verbal children?
Yes. Generalization programming is especially important for AAC users and non-verbal children. Multiple exemplar training works across response modalities (pointing, eye gaze, device activation). Can we work on generalization at the same time as new skill acquisition?
